RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
