Why this DNC is Hiding their Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: An Analysis.

This decision from the Democratic National Committee to withhold the public viewing regarding its own post-election analysis concerning the 2024 election is stunning but not surprising. Opposed to frank assessments, the DNC often functions closer to a communications shop than a political organization committed to building local power for winning elections.

A Climate That Avoids Dissent

Unwilling to break with the prevailing attitude demanding unity, the DNC has continued within that legacy all through this past year. Releasing the findings would have indicated whether party leaders truly desire to promote honest conversation regarding the missteps that enabled the former president to return to the White House. Instead, the leadership is moving forward under the pretense that there is little to be learned following the tragic debacle from the last cycle.

"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? If the answer is no, it is an unnecessary diversion from the core mission," a rationale reportedly given to justify concealing the report.

Major Failures a Report Would Have Explored

Any valuable post-mortem of substance would tackle head-on key points of failure. These include:

  • Voter Disengagement: Failing to retain among a significant portion of the electorate that backed the party's candidate during the previous election became a critical factor in the narrowly decided 2024 election.
  • The Insistence to Seek Re-election: The unwavering decision by the incumbent to stay in the race, alongside an extremely delayed withdrawal, has been criticized as denying the party's base of a competitive nomination process.
  • Losing Touch With Everyday Americans: While facing economic anxiety, the campaign reportedly ceding to corporate donors' interests without successfully attempting to challenge the effects of profit-seeking.
  • A Gaza Effect: The refusal to adjust a stance concerning a ongoing war reportedly led to losing many voters, particularly among young people, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • A Decline in Youth Backing: Polling data demonstrates a significant drop-off in support for the party among voters aged 18-29.

A Pattern Avoiding Accountability

This refusal fits a pattern to avoid difficult realities. This mirrors an episode in which virtually every Democratic officeholder in Washington went along with a sitting president's insistence on seeking another term until a poor televised debate forced a change.

Meanwhile, large majorities of Democratic voters had been repeatedly informing pollsters that they opposed that candidate to run again.

Campaign Spending Concerns

An honest report might also investigate questions about where money went, including what sums were directed to insider consultants and ad buyers during a campaign that managed to spend a staggering amount over a few months.

The Broader Problem

Fundamentally, the suppression of the official autopsy points to an allegiance toward the established hierarchy responsible for an unsuccessful national race. The message for rank-and-file members – including millions of small donors – appears to be that they cannot have a right to understand the lessons the insiders have learned from an analysis drawing from conversations with insiders.

A political entity unwilling to critically review where it went wrong is unlikely to break free from the cycle which was so advantageous to the rival party.
